In 1986 the reported population was 360, and the town had three businesses, a post office, a school and two cemeteries. The Sweet Home community was originally settled during the mid-1800s. In 1852, a post office was established with Captain J.A. York as postmaster. York also laid out the town and partnered with the West family, early area settlers, in business ventures. A stagecoach provided regular service through Sweet Home, which was on the old Spanish trail between Houston and San Antonio, establishing the settlement as a thriving trading community.

The new school also served as a community recreation center until it burned. The Work Projects Administration built a concrete-tile school at the community that operated until 1954, when the Post Oak school district absorbed its students. Sweet Home began to decline with the failure of the cotton economy in the late 1920s. By the early 1970s church services were held there once a month, and annual homecomings took place on the third Sunday in July. The community’s name was derived from West’s daughter’s hope that the new area would make a “sweet home” for them. In 1860, West established stables, a hotel and a store at the site. During the Civil War the town served as a winter camp for freight and cotton wagontrains carrying supplies from Alleyton to Brownsville, the only Confederate port remaining open during much of the war. Around 1873 Czechs and Germans began to move into the community. In 1887, when the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway built five miles south of the town, West sold his buildings to Jan Matusek and moved his store to the railroad. Other settlers from the old town joined him, and by 1890 the new community of Sweet Home had six stores. In 1948 the town had twelve stores, a recreation hall, and a church for its population of 350.

However, Old Sweet Home remains a significant part of Lavaca County history. Sweet Home, on Farm Road 141 eight miles northeast of Giddings in northeastern Lee County, was founded by black settlers from Washington and Fayette counties. Cotton and grain farming were the major occupations, and a grain mill and a cotton gin operated there. The first church in Sweet Home, the Providence Missionary Baptist Church, began in a log cabin about 1880.
Residents also farmed, with cotton and corn becoming staple crops of the area. After the Civil War, Sweet Home became a thriving ranching community. George West, a noted rancher, became known for driving a herd of 14,000 cattle from Lavaca County to an Indian reservation in Montana.
